Torrential Rain, Mini tornado’s, Engine changes and Accident repairs

Round six of the HI Q Components NZ Formula First National Series

took place at Hampton Downs Speedworks event last weekend.

This was an unusual meeting with perhaps a twilight feel about it.

The Team were not allowed access to the venue until 7.00am Friday morning

So I drove the Transporter up Thursday so as to be on the gate the minute it opened

to get set up, the rest of the crew drove through the night to arrive early Friday morning.

Set up went pretty smoothly and we were all ready for our first of two practice sessions

at 1.30pm, this was a dry session and saw Callum P2, the second session was wet and this

time it was Dylan that was P2, so we finished the day feeling we had the prospect of a good

weekend.

Qualifying was in difficult greasy conditions and we did not make the best of it, so once again we were

back in the pack for race one. We had to change Dylan’s engine following a bearing failure in Qual.

Race one was nothing to write home about so we went over the New engine to try and extract the best out

of it.

Sunday was not looking good after constant over night rain it was looking more like the event was going to be

cancelled, but the weather eased a bit and we managed to get started, we picked up P5 and P13, car 41 was a DNF after

contact, car 53 was disqualified for the contact. We were pleased with the P5, and to move on.

Race three took for ever to get started and after a false start and two hours went by we finally got the

race underway this time we picked up P3 Podium our first for the season, P7, P9 and P13, in a race that saw two safety cars

and a fair amount of hairy driving.

Our next event is again at Hampton Downs March 25/26th 2017.
